Advocacy

California Humanities is an independent nonprofit and a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, (NEH). As the only statewide humanities funder, we promote the humanities as relevant, meaningful ways to understand the human condition and to connect us to each other in order to become a better California. Since 1975, we have played a critical role across our state in producing, funding, and supporting media, literature, reading and discussion programs, cultural experiences, and other events in every legislative district in the state.

We need your help to continue to provide accessible public humanities programming in your district. If you have enjoyed or benefited from a California Humanities’ program or grant, please take a moment today to share your story with your elected official.

Here are a few ways for you to personalize your story:

  • Tell your elected official why California Humanities programming is important to you
  • Describe how California Humanities-supported program or event had an impact on you or your community
  • Thank your elected official for funding that made your grant or program possible
  • Urge your elected official to support increased funding for California Humanities

Humanities on the Hill:

Humanities on the Hill (HOH) is an annual two-day event when state humanities councils’ staff and board members go to Washington, D.C. to visit the offices of their members of Congress to talk about the programs that have been funded in their districts. The goal of HOH is to better inform members of Congress about the importance of humanities programming to the lives of their constituents, as well as to thank them for their on-going support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
