Radio broadcast: "Broadway: Around the World in 30 Blocks," a radio series about the culture and cuisine along Sacramento's most delicious street. The series airs on Capital Public Radio on the second Friday of each month during "Morning Edition" through November 2009. Learn more about the project and listen to the first segment.

California Stories live events:

Orland: "How I See It: My Place," an exhibit of photographs and essays by Orland teens about their town. The teens spent 10 weeks exploring Orland, photographing what most of us take for granted. It's astonishing what they have come up with. Orland Free Library through Saturday, January, 10. 333 Mill Street. More.

San Francisco: "Polk Street: Lives in Transition," an exhibit of photographs and audio on the changing face of Polk Street. Opens Thursday January 15. Talk by historian Susan Stryker at 5:30 with reception to follow. Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Historical Society, 657 Mission St. More.

StoryCorps visits L.A.: StoryCorps, the nationwide oral history projects that records the stories of everyday Americans as they tell them to friends and loved ones, will be in Los Angeles from January 29 through February 21. The recording site will be in an Airstream trailer parked outside the East Los Angeles Public Library at 4837 Third Street. Reservations can be made by calling 800-850-4406. Slots fill up quickly, so don't delay. Find out more about StoryCorps and listen to sample stories. StoryCorps is also looking for organizations to serve as local community partners in Los Angeles. Opportunity for young filmmakers: Bresee Foundation's Fourth Annual Youth Film Festival on Social Justice invites submissions from young filmmakers on the theme "Hard Times for the American Dream: Personal Stories of Struggle." Durfee Foundation sabbatical opportunity: The Durfee Sabbatical Program offers up to six leaders in the nonprofit sector stipends and expenses of up to $35,000 to travel, reflect or otherwise renew themselves in whatever manner they propose. The deadline for applications is March 18. More.
