For grant seekers:

The guidelines for April 1, 2009, round of funding for the California Story Fund are now available. An online application for the grant program will be available on the Council website on March 2, 2009. All applications must be submitted electronically by April 1, 2009. The goal of the grant program is to encourage Californians from many communities to share their stories, thus promoting greater understanding and appreciation of the richness and complexity of our state

California Stories events:

Radio broadcast: "Broadway: Around the World in 30 Blocks," a radio series about the cultures and cuisines along Sacramento's most delicious street, airs on Capital Public Radio on the program "Morning Edition" on the second Friday of each month through November 2009. Learn more about the project and listen to the first segment.

Film screening in Los Angeles: "The Eastsiders," a Council-supported documentary film celebrating the Eastside of Los Angeles from 1920 to 1965, will be screened at the upcoming Pan African Film and Arts Festival on Sunday, February 8, at 2 pm and Monday, February 9, at 1:30 pm. The largest black film festival in the United States, the PAFF features films from around the world and runs from Thursday, February 5, through Monday, February 16, at the Culver Plaza Theatre in Culver City. Other film news: The California Documentary Project film "Inventing Los Angeles: The Chandlers and Their Times," about the history of the Los Angeles Times, recently premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival and will air on PBS this fall. Exhibit In San Francisco: "Polk Street: Lives in Transition," an exhibit of photographs and audio on the changing face of Polk Street, continues through June 2009 at the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Historical Society, 657 Mission St. More.

Interested in showing "Hollywood Chinese" to your class or community group? Arthur Dong's award-winning film chronicling Chinese representation in Hollywood feature films now comes with a discussion and study guide. More.

"Digital Preservation: How to Preserve Digital Assets," a workshop for archivists, librarians and records managers, will be held at the Buena Park Library District on February 11, at the San Francisco Public Library on March 17, and at the Los Angeles Public Library on June 10. The fee is $75. More.

StoryCorps now in L.A. and S.F.: StoryCorps, the nationwide oral history projects that records the stories of everyday Americans as they tell them to friends and loved ones, is in Los Angeles through February 21. The recording site is in an Airstream trailer parked outside the East Los Angeles Public Library at 4837 Third Street. StoryCorps also has a storytelling booth in San Francisco's Contemporary Jewish Museum through October 2009. Recording sessions at both locations are by appointment only and can be made by visiting the StoryCorps website or calling-by-calling 800-850-4406. Opportunity for young filmmakers: Bresee Foundation's Fourth Annual Youth Film Festival on Social Justice invites submissions from young filmmakers on the theme "Hard Times for the American Dream: Personal Stories of Struggle."
