The Council will select new members for its Board of Directors later this year and invites nominations from the public. More.

The grant guidelines for the October 2009 round of funding for the California Documentary Project are now available. The grant program supports film, radio and new media projects that document the California experience and explore issues of significance to Californians. More.

Film screenings and radio broadcasts:

Ritchie Valens“Chicano Rock,” the lively story of how young Mexican Americans in East Los Angeles created a new musical form — a blend of white rock, black soul and Latin rhythms, will be screened at the Silent Movie Theater in Hollywood as part of the Don’t Knock the Rock film and music festival. 8 pm, July 2. 611 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles. "Broadway: Around the World in 30 Blocks," a radio series about the cultures and cuisines along Sacramento's most delicious street. The series airs on Capital Public Radio on the second Friday of each month through November 2009 during "Morning Edition." Learn more about the project, listen to the segments and get recipes.

Live events:

Culver City: "On the Front Line: Three Generations of Soldiers' Voices," a dramatic performance based on the stories of veterans of World War II and the wars in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. 2 pm, Saturday, July 11. USVAA Theater (United States Veterans' Artists Alliance), 10858 Culver Boulevard. More.

San Francisco Bay Area Richmond: "Our Backyard: The Richmond Greenway and Shoreline Teen Project," a documentary film about the Richmond Greenway, a former Santa Fe railroad corridor being transformed into open space. 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 23.
