SUMMARY:Is Diversity Bad for Democracy? Cal Humanities / Zócalo Eve
 nt
URL:http://www.calhum.org/news/events/is-diversity-bad-for-democ
 racy
DESCRIPTION:Democracy -- and effective decision-making and compromise wi
thin democratic systems -- requires trust. But as American s
ociety has become more diverse\, gridlock has ensued\, and so
has controversy. Some scholars argue that the more diverse a
neighborhood or society\, the less people trust their neighb
ors and fellow citizens. Others say that living among people
who look and life differently makes people better informed
and more sensitive to differences -- and thus better\, more c
areful citizens. Almanac of American Politics co-author Mich
ael Barone\; University of California Irvine sociologist and
The Diversity Paradox co-author Jennifer Lee\; and City Unive
rsity of New York scholar and Blurring the Color Line author
Richard Alba visit Zócalo to discuss the challenges\, and t
he opportunities\, that diversity creates for democracy. This
event is produced in partnership with Zócalo Public Square
