California Humanities’ new office continues to serve the people and communities of California

OAKLAND, CA – Today, California Humanities announced the move of its Northern California office from its long-held base in San Francisco to the heart of Old Oakland. The new headquarters will be located above Swan’s Market, a historic marketplace that was once a major shopping destination in Oakland, and now houses restaurants, stores and businesses in a revitalized neighborhood.

“We are thrilled about our new location,” said California Humanities President & CEO Julie Fry. “Oakland represents the nexus of history and the future, which aligns well with our mission: to connect Californians to ideas and one another in order to understand our shared heritage and diverse cultures, inspire civic participation, and shape our future.”

Previously referred to as “Cal Humanities,” the organization recently updated their name to California Humanities. This name change reflects the central focus of the organization: the people and communities of California. California Humanities is an independent nonprofit and state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“California Humanities is very happy to be moving our Northern California office to Oakland, and we look forward to becoming an active part of this vibrant and diverse East Bay community,” California Humanities Board Chair, Margaret Shelleda says. “We have spent many productive and exciting years in San Francisco and are confident that our new home will provide us with many opportunities to continue to engage with new partners in the Bay Area as well as statewide.”
Josh Simon, Executive Director of East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC), the nonprofit that owns the property, states, “EBALDC is excited about California Humanities joining the dynamic mix of small businesses and community organizations that make up Swan’s Market. We look forward to working together to foster healthy, vibrant neighborhoods.”
