The Philippine Consulate General would like to invite you to a photo exhibit by Dr. Mellie Lopez-Francisco entitled “Pioneer Filipino Women in California – Their Role in Early Filipino Migration in the Golden State” which will be on display at the 4th floor Exhibition Room of the Philippine Center Bldg. from 30 November to 7 December 2006, 1pm-5pm. The opening of the exhibit will be held on 29 November 2006 at the 5th floor Social Hall at 6pm with His Excellency Ambassador Willy C. Gaa, Philippine Ambassador to the United States as the special guest.
The photo exhibit will feature twelve courageous Filipino women from Northern, Central and Southern California who played very important roles as active participants in the early Filipino migration and development of the history of California. This project was recently awarded a grant by the California Council for the Humanities as part of its statewide California Stories Initiative and complements the centennial celebration of Filipino migration to the United States.
From the Philippine Center Bldg., the photo exhibit will move to City College in San Francisco for the community participation component of the project and will be open to the general public starting on 8 December 2006.
Dr. Lopez-Francisco, a University of the Philippines professor and Ph.D. in Anthropology-Folklore from UC Berkeley, collected these photographs as part of her post-doctoral research at the Institute of American Culture at the UC Los Angeles from 1986-1988.
