Calexico: California Borderlands

W.M. Corporation
Project Director: Peter Laufer

The true story of life in California’s borderlands

This radio documentary features the stories of people affected by immigration on a daily basis — those who live or work on the California-Mexico border. Listeners meet a cross section of leading characters, from immigrants driving without drivers’ licenses to individuals trying to force immigrants back over the border.

“As the nation’s most highly trafficked point of crossing, the California-Mexico border is the site of intense cross-cultural interaction and a microcosm of national conflicts over immigration,” said Project Director and Radio Journalist Peter Laufer. “The stories of people and places provide a humanizing context critically absent from the political debate.”

“My hope is that by amplifying the voices of the people and communities most affected by immigration, ‘Calexico’ will help inform the public debate and add more voices to the policy-making process,” Laufer added.

“Calexico” will air on the nationally syndicated radio program “Washington Monthly on the Radio.”
