“I was born in Mexico, and I came [to Los Angeles] when I was six months old … then in the Depression my mom went to Mexico. My family has been here since California started. But during the Depression, they took my mom over to Mexico. Every time my mom was going to give birth, she went to Mexico to have us, three of us. …  they wanted us to be born in Mexico, to please the grandmothers. Then later in life we found out we should have been born here. I really never understood why, you know. I always asked my mother, and she says, "That's what they wanted me to do in those days."

Photo of a project participantDuring spring 2005, David Greenberger visited senior centers and other sites around East Los Angeles, recording conversations with more than two dozen elderly Mexican American residents. Those stories are part of a radio project, “Growing Old in East L.A.” The hourlong radio documentary explores the unique challenges this population faces in creating a life in California.

David Greenberger has been talking to old people and collecting their thoughts in the periodical “The Duplex Planet” for the past 25 years. His projects have included performances throughout the United States, four books and six CDs. Greenberger’s work takes a literary approach to documentary in his effort to capture the diverse character of old age.
