Documenting the struggles and accomplishments of farm workers in the Coachella Valley

This project examines the personal histories of immigrant and migrant farm worker families that settled in the colonias of Coachella Valley, California.

Multimedia artist, Jacalyn Lopez Garcia follows the progress of seven migrant families to create a photographic document of their involvement in the changing Californian social landscape.

This multimedia documentary project focuses on the personal stories of struggle and accomplishments of families, students, and members of the growing Colonia communities located in the Southeastern deserts of California.

Photographic imagery and personal stories reveal both past and present accomplishments and offer a 21st century perspective on the subjects’ journey to a better life.

Dr. Carlos Velez-Ibanez, the humanities expert on the project said: "The Ernesto Galarza Applied Research Center at UC Riverside is helping build capacity within colonias and this photographic body of work will provide a visual parallel to that continued process."
