Film Presentation
"The Grapes of Wrath" is the classic film adaptation of the 1939 Steinbeck novel
directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. The film vividly portrays
the forced exodus of the Joad family from Oklahoma as a result of economic and
ecological disasters (the Depression an the Dust Bowl) and their struggles in the
"promised land" of California as migrant farm laborers, seeking to achieve a better
life in the face of discrimination and exploitaiton. Rich in human drama, the film
is a classic work of cinema and a masterpiece of filmmaking. 1940 Black and White.

Musical Performance
Los Angeles Folk Singer Ross Altman will perform a special program of
Woody Guthrie's Dustbowl Ballads. Reading "The Grapes of Wrath" is a
statewide initiative of the California Council for the Humanities
encouraging everyone to read and discuss "The Grapes of Wrath" and share
stories about the California immigrant experience.
