In honor of California Stories: Reading "The Grapes of Wrath," Gov. Gray Davis has signed an official proclamation declaring this summer is to be "Reading 'The Grapes of Wrath'" summer.

| WHEREAS, the California Council for the Humanities in partnership with the California Center for the Book has initiated a statewide campaign inviting Californians to come together to read and discuss The Grapes of Wrath; and
WHEREAS, the story of the Joad family's compassion and endurance compels us to consider not only our own experiences as Californians, but also the experiences of those we do not know to create a stronger community; and WHEREAS, reading The Grapes of Wrath provides opportunities for members of the _________ community to read the book, share personal stories and discover their relationship to issues facing _______and California today; and WHEREAS, by reading and discussing a book is an easy way to share stories, get people talking to each other, help to break down barriers between people and will lead to the building of stronger community ties; and WHEREAS, The Grapes of Wrath month is an opportunity for government to join forces with community organizations, cultural institutions, other municipalities, and the citizenry at large to celebrate and explore our cultural roots and historical bonds as portrayed in The Grapes of Wrath; THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City of _______ does hereby urge all community members and organizations to participate in celebratory and educational activities promoting John Steinbeck's classic novel The Grapes of Wrath during the month of October, 2002.
