NATIONAL BRIEFING: WEST -
California: Let Them Read "Grapes"

By Barbara Whitaker

June 8, 2002

The state's first lady, Sharon Davis, gave Californians a reading assignment, asking them to finish "The Grapes of Wrath," by the native son John Steinbeck, by October. "We hope this unique program will not only bring communities together," she said, "but also inspire more Californians to make independent reading an everyday habit." State libraries will organize discussion groups and programs related to the book.
