TWO CENTS On California's reading initiative

Saturday, June 8, 2002

QUESTION: Would you join Californians in reading "The Grapes of Wrath"

Randall Smith, 38, El Cerrito
Yes. In order to understand California, you need to know the state's history; Steinbeck's book is a key linchpin for comprehension of the forces which led people to the Not-So-Golden State.

Isolde Honore, 20, Piedmont
If all 35 million Californians read it at once, how would I ever find a copy to read myself? Supply side permitting, I wouldn't mind reading it.

Tom Rothacker, 34, San Jose
No, I would read a novel that's actually worthwhile, such as "TheFountainhead" by Ayn Rand.

Glendy Chan, 22, San Francisco
Sure. I'm a firm believer in the transformative power of books and ideas, so I thoroughly support this initiative. The last time I read Steinbeck's novel was in my sophomore year of high school. Rereading it would bring back the vivid images Steinbeck wove into his literary masterpiece.

Robert Golomb, 44, Lafayette
I read "The Grapes of Wrath" when I was in high school. I probably did not understand it very well or enjoy it. I would definitely re-read it. This would set a very good example for my children. And since there is no test, it would be much more pleasurable than my high school experience.
