History Alive! Chautauquas

These living history performances featured dramatic, historically accurate portrayals of some of the most fascinating and important figures of Gold Rush-era California. CCH developed 13 character presentations and between 1998 and the end of 2000 created and funded Chautauqua performances in every region of the state.

In the performances, the historical character presented an unscripted monologue about his or her life, then engaged the audience in a question-and-answer session still acting as the character. The performer then stepped out of character and talked with the audience about the character.

The History Alive! Chautauqua figures included:

  • Juana Briones
  • Yee Fung Cheung
  • Antonio Garra
  • José Jesus
  • William Leidesdorff
  • Biddy Mason
  • Pio Pico
  • Mary Ellen Pleasant
  • Sarah Royce
  • Dame Shirley
  • John Sutter
  • Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo
  • Camillo Ynitia

Chautauqua presentations were hailed as one of the most dynamic, entertaining ways of engaging audiences of all ages and backgrounds in the adventure of historical discovery.
