MOTHEREAD
MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD, L.A.
(Mamá Lee/Papá Lee)

MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD, L.A. is a family reading program based on a simple idea: when families read together -- and talk about what they read -- remarkable things happen. Family ties are strengthened. Parents become reading role models for their children. Children become better readers and better learners.

For most children, hearing books read aloud by a caring family member is the first and most important literacy-enhancing experience of their lives. Clearly, parents need to be involved, but often they, too, need help.

In 1993, the California Council for the Humanities introduced MOTHEREAD to Los Angeles County in an effort to address some of the challenges brought to stark light in the wake of the 1992 civil unrest. The United Way took the reins of Motheread in January 2003.
