Community Stories of How and Why We Are Here

A play based on the stories of Mendocino-area residents

The focus of this project was a Mendocino College class, open to all members of the community, involving story gathering and the creation of an original theater piece drawn from the stories.

Stories were collected from a variety of sources, including members of the community and historical archives. The Mendocino area like much of the rest of California has become increasingly diverse, and the idea, according to Project Director Kate Magruder, was to uncover the history of the area and to juxtapose it with the stories of the people shaping the community today.

Magruder's class, which began in January 2004, culminated with four public performances at the Ukiah Playhouse in May 2004, followed by "talk-back" sessions with the audience.
