Documenting the experiences of older career waitresses in San Francisco

This San Francisco Bay Area multimedia project gathered stories from senior-aged career waitresses, including two women who worked for 30 years at Miz Brown’s Feed Bag, a well-known San Francisco coffee shop that closed recently after being in business for 50 years. The project also brought together some of the women’s regular customers to share stories connected to their experiences with their favorite waitresses.

The women were interviewed and photographed and the material made available on a project website and at the Labor Archive and Research Center in San Francisco.

An exhibit of the stories and photographs rook place in spring 2005.

“This project will celebrate the lives of these women, many of whom are now in their 70s and 80s, and bring awareness to their importance as workers and their role in the community,” said Project Director Candacy Taylor.
