Humanities grant awarded to local filmmakers

September 6, 2007

MOUNT SHASTA – As part of the “California Stories: How I See It” youth campaign, the California Council for the Humanities has awarded $240,000 to eight projects across the state to enable young Californians to create films about their communities and what they care about, a recent press release announced.

Mount Shasta area residents Mark Oliver and Charlie Unkefer are recipients for their film project: “Voices between the Mountains – Coming of age in the Siskiyous.” Oliver and Unkefer are working with the Siskiyou Arts Council on this project.

According to the release, this statewide project will be a year-long effort and will focus on the broad theme of connections and disconnections.

“The theme provides a common denominator among all the projects,” Raeshma Razvi, an experienced filmmaker and youth media programmer who is managing the project for the council, said in the release.

When completed in summer 2008, all the films will be screened locally in the young people’s communities, broadcast on cable television channels and will be available for viewing on the Council’s Web site.

Oliver and Unkefer are interested in hearing from young people between the ages of 14 and 19 with unique perspectives on living in Siskiyou County who would like to participate in the project. They are also in need of a donated office space or studio to work with teens on the project throughout the school year. Contact Mark Oliver at buggylifer@yahoo.com (859-3316) or the Siskiyou Arts Council at siskiyouarts@yahoo.com (938-0130).

This project is a program of the California Council for the Humanities’ California Stories: How I See It campaign, in partnership with the Digital Storytelling Institute of the Community Technology Foundation of California.
